Hash key on a UK Mac Keyboard

This is for all Mac users in the UK, if you are having trouble finding the hash key on your Mac keyboard, I'll put you out of your misery, it isn't there. For some reason it was seen as expendable. However, hash signs can be written in abundance by holding the Alt key down and then pressing the number 3. #enjoy!

Thank you! should have googled this so much earlier lol, have been copying and pasting it in twitter. Why Macs don't have simpler buttons for delete or # is a mystery but at least this works! #thanks

thank you was really annoying me cause i couldnt do the hash tags on twitter and was having to use my fone everytime

For me it was Shift plus 3 that got a hash mark -- I get a pound sign if I do alt plus 3. (I'm on a new Mac, bought this year.) It's crazy that it's different for different machines!

Doesn't work in Vim in Terminal (OSX 10.4.11), any idea what stupid squiggly code represents ALT+3? something like:
\033[4~
(This makes the home key work properly - thanks to

For all those people that say they have to press shift+3 to get the # symbol, its because you keyboard is set up as a US layout rather than UK.

to change click on the flag icon in the top right corner menu bar.

Unknown said...

shift + 3 also works for UK keyboard set as US keyboard

Thanks a million for that info. I too have a # in some of my passwords and thought I would have to be changing the relevant passwords. Info will come in useful; but there is a profusion of other symbols if you hold 'alt' + a number or another character. Do Apple provide a 'dictionary' or guide to these characters? Would be good to know.
Thanks again. Let the '#' be with you!
